A rug IS a great way to tie any room together, but in nurseries or children's rooms, it can become even more important as a soft playing area for little ones. There are more choices than ever before in children's rugs, from small accent rugs to large pieces designed to cover most of a room. Themes range from cute to sophisticated, with texture and color playing a big role.
"I always suggest a rug of some shape or size for the nursery - it helps ground the design of the room," says Katy Mimari, celebrity nursery designer and owner of San Antonio-based boutique Nursery Couture. "A rug doesn't have to take up the entire floor either; just a cute accent rug at the front of the crib or side of the bed will add texture and color to the room. One of my favorite rugs to recommend is the Shaggy Raggy Rug by The Rug Market; their 4x4 round fits well under a crib or next to a bed, and can fit in your home washer and dryer."
Jellybean Rugs have also considered the practical side of things, with their playful, colorful hand-hooked designs that are also completely machine washable and suited for both indoor and outdoor use. An added bonus - they're made from 35% recycled materials.
Capel Rugs' new Chenille Creations line is a custom-made rug program that enables designers and distributors to choose a base, accent and border from about 18 designer colors of plush, ultra-soft cotton chenille. In addition to choosing the color combinations, customers also select from about 24 standard shapes and sizes or specify custom dimensions, creating infinite design possibilities, from brilliant and bold to soft and serene.
Capel Rugs' Chenille Creations rugs also feature distinct patterns that are reversible for twice the wear - perhaps especially important in a child's room.
Trend-wise, rugs reflect colors and themes seen in bedding and décor, with muted shades of orange, green and blue particularly popular at the moment - especially for boys. Retro themes, like The Rug Market Kids' Beach Cruiser, create a fun environment for kids with a hint of nostalgia sure to please parents.
Other popular themes for boys' rooms continue to be pirates, sports and transportation, but these are getting a more sophisticated look as well, with looks designed to grow with children through the tween and teen years.
