Toys "R" Us launches green toys

Line to hit stores before Earth Day on April 22

-- Kids Today, 4/3/2008 1:16:00 PM

Toys “R” Us is launching a proprietary line of eco-friendly toys, plush and dolls this month.

The collection of wooden activity toys, natural cotton plush animals and organic cotton dolls will be available exclusively at stores and online at www.toysrus.com. The retailer plans to have the initial offering available by April 22, Earth Day, with plans to introduce more product later this year.

The packaging is made of mostly recycled material, Toys "R" Us says.

The products are packaged in earth-tone colored boxes that feature Toys “R” Us’ signature flipped “R” with a leaf that is encircled by the words “Recycle, Renew, Reuse, Re-think,” signifying that the toy is eco-friendly. The packaging is also made of no less than 70% recycled material, the company said.

The wooden toys are made using a wood-burning technique that gives them a classic look. The Forest Stewardship Council has certified that the materials used to make the toys were sourced from well-managed forests following a set list of standards, and each toy bears a FSC logo. The eight –SKU collection is composed of a fire engine, utility crane, shape sorter, trailer truck, racing car, formula car, alphabet blocks wagon and stacking train. Retail prices for the toys, for children ages 2 and older, range between $9.99 and $24.99.

The plush animals and organic cotton dolls are colored using natural or water-based dyes and are made with unprocessed, unbleached and untreated cotton. The plush assortment includes a lamb, monkey, bunny and teddy bear, and the dolls are available in pale pink and light brown. Both the dolls and plush are suited for newborns and older, with retail prices of $14.99 each.

“We know that kids are becoming more environmentally conscious and are curious about how they can do their part to help protect the planet,” said Karen Dodge, chief merchandising officer for Toys “R” Us, U.S. “Going green is more than just a trend. It’s becoming a lifestyle. This is just our first step in offering our customers the best selection of eco-friendly and organic products in all of our Toys “R” Us stores nationwide.”
