The centerpiece of the nursery

Crib choices almost limitless

Tanya K. Merritte -- Kids Today, 1/1/2005 12:00:00 AM

Without a doubt, the crib is among the first things new parents think about when preparing the nursery for the newest member of the family. Despite their simple purpose, cribs are available in a dizzying range of styles, finishes and prices. Parents can go modern with manufacturers like Nurseryworks, traditional with Young America or high-end with Martinek Bebe. So what's popular now?

Retailers say that while traditional colors are still selling well, they've seen a rise in sales of darker finishes. "Lots of dark colors are doing well," said Ken Goore, owner of Goore's in Sacramento, Calif., citing Baby's Dream's chestnut, cherry and amber finishes.

Mark Lazar, who owns Lazar's in Lincolnwood, Ill., said that antique white is still a hot finish at his store.

But he added that medium tones, such as honey and caramel, are becoming more popular. "They give customers somewhere to go between natural and cherry finishes," he said. Lazar also said that since the ABC Expo in September, he's started to sell more dark finishes, such as a crib in chocolate from Morigeau-Lepine.

As for the ubiquitous convertible crib, Goore said they continue to sell well at his store. Lazar said he also sells them, although that doesn't appear to be the first thing on the customer's mind. Said Lazar: "The customer has to be attracted to the piece."

The Hampton crib by Delta Enterprise can be assembled with no tools. Later, the three-in-one crib can be converted to a toddler bed and a loveseat.

Bonavita's Taylor collection includes the Pamela crib in classic white.

Nurseryworks' modern-styled crib is available in seven lacquer finishes and offers several decorative slat and end-panel options. The crib retails for $920.

Young America Baby's Harbor Town crib is made of rustic cherry solids and veneers with a lightly distressed finish and has gently curved end panels with louvered details. The retail price of the crib is $830.

The Crib 2 Queen crib is part of Legacy's new Devonshire collection. The crib converts to a toddler, twin, full or queen bed — the only thing the customer needs to buy is the bed rails. The crib is available in pecan (shown), antique cherry and moonlight finishes.

Bambino Reale's Primero collection includes this crib in a cherry finish.

Dutailier's La Petite Collection Baby is made of solid wood and has a stylish look. The collection is available in about 20 finishes.

The Heartland Hills Heritage crib from P.J. Kids is made of solid birch with a black cherry stain and lacquer finish. The crib, which can convert to a day bed and full headboard, retails between $479 and $499.

The Sea Island collection from Baby's Dream is available in three finishes and is made of premium pine. The dropgate crib retails for $499.

Martinek Bebe's solid wood crib features delicate carvings of rabbits and flowers. The crib retails for $1,595.
