January High Point market?

Staff -- Kids Today, 12/21/2005 12:00:00 AM

HIGH POINT -- At least six manufacturers plan to open showrooms here in January to coincide with a retailer event planned by Lifestyle Enterprise.

Lifestyle said in October it would invite retailers to its 28,000-square-foot Forbidden City showroom here Jan. 16-18. James Riddle, managing director, said at the time he expected other companies to follow.

"We hear that over half of the Top 100 retailers will be coming to High Point in January, and we simply could not pass up the opportunity to see them," said Doug Bassett, vice president of sales at Vaughan-Bassett.

He said his company had talked to Vaughan Furniture, Manchester Furniture Group and Orleans Furniture about opening showrooms.

Also planning to open is Universal Furniture. "We've had calls from some of our dealers who may be coming to Lifestyle's show asking if we'd have something to show them," said President and CEO Randy Chrisley. "We could have concept boards and mockups. It would be what premarket used to be."
Fine Furniture Design and Marketing also is expected to open.

Lifestyle exhibited at the Las Vegas market in temporary space in July, but will skip the Jan. 30-Feb. 3 show in favor of its event here two weeks earlier. The company said that after evaluating its costs in Las Vegas, said to be close to $500,000, it concluded it could make more of an impact by hosting its own mini-market.

Orleans doesn't see this as an alternative to Vegas, but as a supplement for those on the East Coast not planning to travel west. President and CEO Ed Marshall said Orleans would be at the Rio in Vegas in January and has committed to the next building at the World Market Center.

For the January showing, Vaughan-Bassett will debut a promotionally priced cherry bedroom group and a mid-priced oak bedroom group, said Bassett.
Riddle said retailers visiting Lifestyle in January will see "all new items and our best pricing ever." The company is planning to host dinners at Centennial Station on the 16th and 17th. It also will have drawings for BMW and Mercedes-Benz cars.

If the show meets expectations, Lifestyle will host a similar event in July, he said.
