K.I.D.S. collects more than $400,000 worth of new juvenile products at ABC show

-- Kids Today, 9/16/2008 9:04:00 AM

Global charity Kids in Distressed Situations collected more than $400,000 worth of new juvenile products from exhibitors at the conclusion of the 2008 ABC Kids Expo Show, September 7-11 in Las Vegas. Volunteers from six local charitable agencies helped collect the merchandise, which will be distributed by these agencies over the next several weeks to children and families in need throughout the greater Las Vegas area.

The merchandise collection from show exhibitors was heavily promoted by posters, flyers and an ABC/K.I.D.S. breakfast event held early in the show, sponsored by Baby & Kids Magazine and attended by more than 60 juvenile industry leaders. K.I.D.S. Board Chairman Rick Schaub, ABC Chairman Ken Goore, and Renee Pepys Lowe, ABC and K.I.D.S. board member, each spoke about the need for manufacturers to donate juvenile products.

"I attended an Operation Homefront distribution for military families and there were 1,000 people in line" Goore said. "Afterwards, so many families came back and hugged and kissed us and thanked us for the juvenile product they received."

Goore's remarks at the breakfast were underscored by Carl Long, president of the Las Vegas chapter of Operation Homefront, who described the extent of need among spouses and children of soldiers on active duty and the positive impact that the products provided by K.I.D.S. has on these families.

At a press conference during the show, the ABC Kids Expo organization again expressed its continuing commitment to the work of K.I.D.S. MGM/Mirage, another financial supporter of K.I.D.S., was represented at the press conference by Merlinda Gallegos, the company's vice president of corporate philanthropy. She explained that MGM/Mirage supports the work of K.I.D.S. in Las Vegas with such local agencies as Child Haven, Shade Tree, Safe Nest, Catholic Charities and Spread the Word: Kids to Kids and in areas where MGM/Mirage properties were heavily damaged by Hurricane Katrina.

"K.I.D.S. continues to fulfill its promise of bringing smiles to thousands of children in need," Gallegos said, concluding her remarks with a quotation from Herman Melville: "We cannot live for ourselves alone. Our lives are connected by a thousand invisible threads, and along these sympathetic fibers, our actions run as causes and return to us as results."

K.I.D.S. distributes new clothes, shoes, books, toys, juvenile products and back-to-school items to children in need through more than 1,000 grassroots non-profit agencies. In 2007, it distributed $62 million worth of new products to more than 4.5 million children and their families.
