Developmental toys continue growth

Infant developmental toys have become commonplace in living rooms and playards across the United States. Today's infants and toddlers are learning about and manipulating their world through these colorful, musical and crinkly toys. Infant developmental toys focus on the development of the child's five senses, motor skills and cognitive thinking, as well as his social and emotional skills.
As first reported in Kids Today's specialty store operations report in October 2004, 65% of the responding kids specialty stores carry infant developmental toys as part of their merchandise mix. This figure is up from 59% in 2003. In addition to being sold through specialists, infant developmental toys grace the shelves of every big-box and mass retailer selling toys.
Retail toy sales in the United States declined by 3% to $20.1 billion in 2004, according to Port Washington, N.Y.-based The NPD Group. NPD estimated the infant/preschool segment, including infant developmental toys with $2.9 billion in 2004 retail sales, was up 10% from 2003. While infant developmental toys generally are for children from birth through 2 years, the infant/preschool segment includes toys from birth through 4 years.
Fisher-Price, celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, is the category leader in terms of sales volume. As part of publicly held Mattel, the East Aurora, N.Y.-based toy manufacturer posted worldwide gross sales of $1.92 billion in 2004, up 8% from 2003. Fisher-Price's Laugh & Learn Learning Home, appropriate for ages 6 to 36 months, was named by Toys "R" Us as one of 2004's top toys and by Child Magazine as the best toy in the 0 to 18 month category last year.
Burbank, Calif.-based Baby Einstein debuted its first line of infant developmental toys in January 2004. Operating as a subsidiary of publicly held The Walt Disney Co., Baby Einstein is considered the creator of the infant developmental media category. Its infant developmental toys, manufactured by Equity Marketing, include the Musical Discovery Ladybug, Musical Pop Up Pals and Shapes and Sounds Turtle.
Publicly held LeapFrog Enterprises introduced its LeapFrog Baby line in May 2004. The collection, designed for newborns through toddlers, includes the Learn & Groove Activity Station, Magic Moments Learning Seat and Touch & Tug Discovery Book. The Emeryville, Calif.-based company's 2004 total sales totaled $638.8 million, a 6.1% decrease from 2003. After laying off approximately 100 workers in October 2004, LeapFrog announced in February that it cut another 180 jobs in an effort to cut expenses by $35 million to $40 million.
Learning Curve International, a subsidiary of publicly held RC2, originated the phase-oriented system with its Lamaze brand. The award-winning Lamaze toys are designed to help parents recognize and encourage developmental milestones within the child's first year. For example, Stage 1 toys, appropriate for birth and up, focus on awakening the senses of sight, hearing and touch and include the First Mirror and Jumpin' Jungle Changing Table Mobile. Stage 2 toys, appropriate for 3 months and up, focus on exploring and experimenting and include the Grip & Grab Rattle and Multi-Sensory Clutch Cube.
Other brands employing the phase-oriented system include International Playthings' Earlyears products, Imagiix's Milestones line, Brio's Brio Soft collection and VTech's infant and toddler learning products, as well as lines from Chicco, Infantino and Sassy.
Stoney Creek, Ontario-based Kushies Babies threw its hat into the infant developmental ring this past October. The Kushies line features Boa Stacking Rings, Linko attachable links, magnetic Stacrobats and Kushies Kritters, a collection of baby buddies in textured and colorful fabrics. The Canadian Toy Assn. named the Boa Stacking Rings as one of the hottest toys for preschoolers in November.
