AHFA to host Webinar on CPSIA testing requirements for youth furniture
Event slated for Thursday, Oct. 8
-- Kids Today, 9/28/2009 2:11:00 PM
The American Home Furnishings Alliance is sponsoring an online Webinar on Thursday, Oct. 8, called The Roost: CPSIA Testing Requirements for Youth Furniture.
Join AHFA from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. EDT to hear more about the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s recall notification technology, regular reviews, inaccessible parts, and how this ruling may have an effect on your company. The Webinar is free for AHFA members, and $200 for non-members.
The CPSIA establishes specific lead limits in children’s products. Section 101(a) of the CPSIA provides that, as of Feb.10, 2009, products designed or intended primarily for children 12 and younger may not contain more than 600 parts per million (ppm) of lead. Section 104 of the Act requires the commission to study and develop safety standards for infant and toddler products.
Congress stated that the products the commission must study include: full-size cribs and non full-size cribs; toddler beds; high chairs, booster chairs, hook on chairs; bath seats; gates and other enclosure for confining a child; play yards; stationary activity centers; infant carriers; strollers; walkers; swings; and bassinets and cradles
The CPSC must either make the existing voluntary safety standards for these products mandatory or provide for a stricter safety standard. The commission can prioritize its work on these products but had to begin two rulemakings by Aug. 14, 2009 and promulgate two more rules every six months until all products have a mandatory safety standard.
Once the CPSC has issued these safety standards, it will be illegal to manufacture, sell or import a product that violates the new safety standard which could result in either civil or criminal penalties.
Webinar speakers will be Marie Dugalis and Jay Chrystal of Chemserve Environmental Analyst, which specializes in complete in-house laboratory services, field sampling services, landfill gas, groundwater monitoring, RoHS testing, CPSIA testing, and specialty analysis.
Degulis is a business relations senior executive at Chemserve Lab. Her sales and marketing experience spans 20 years and includes industries such as electronic devices distribution, ASIC consulting engineering, recruitment, education and most recently environmental and consumer product laboratory analysis services at Chemserve Lab. There, she initially was hired to expand business with environmental consulting engineering firms and has transitioned to focus solely on the development of new relationships in order to provide consumer product testing services to the manufacturing business sector.
Chrystal is president and CEO of Chemserve Lab. His laboratory testing experience spans 26 years. Chemserve began as a small laboratory that primarily focused on testing residential drinking water wells. Over time Chemserve added the personnel, equipment and expertise to become a full service environmental lab offering testing services throughout New England for all types of environmental samples. Chrystal has now taken the experience with environmental testing and is applying it to consumer product testing. Utilizing the equipment and capabilities that Chemserve had gained over the years, it was a natural progression to meet the demand of the consumer product market. Chemserve is now accredited as an ISO 17025 laboratory. The scope of accreditation includes lead testing (including coatings, non-metal and metal substrates), phthalate analysis, and ASTM F963 Toy Standard testing. Chrystal is continuing to review regulatory status of consumer goods, and to add additional testing capabilities to meet consumer demands.
