CopCorp adds new Dog of Glee, Just Jimmy licensees

Tanya K. Merritte -- Kids Today, 1/1/2005 12:00:00 AM

CopCorp Licensing has signed several new licensees for two Jim Benton properties — Just Jimmy and Dog of Glee.

CopCorp Licensing said the addition of phrases to the Just Jimmy brand, which previously featured wordless character art of animals, has raised its popularity. Since the phrases were introduced, 10 more licensees have signed on, including Basic Fun for plush and bean bag dolls, Habitat for novelty pillows and Franco Manufacturing for beach towels, bedding and room décor.

Alan Dorfman, president of Basic Fun, said the company planned to introduce its line of Just Jimmy plush and mini-plush keys chains at the New York gift show this month and at Toy Fair next month. The line, which will retail between $5.99 and $14.99, will be in specialty, toy and gift shops by March.

Benton's Dog of Glee features a puppy character whose cute appearance is at odds with his edgy comments.

The property has added 15 new licensees during the past year, including Franco Manufacturing for bedding and bath décor and The Northwest Co. for throws and pillows.

Jeffrey Franco, licensing manager at Franco Manufacturing, said his company plans to launch collections from both properties at the spring Home Textiles Show in New York this April. The lines should be on retail shelves by next fall.

The Northwest Co. is re-launching its Dog of Glee line because the newer designs feature colors that are more likely to appeal to tween girls, said Jennifer Wenz, licensing manager for the textile manufacturer.

The revamped collection of throws, pillows and totes will debut at the spring Home Textile Show. Retail price points are between $14.99 and $29.99, and The Northwest Co. is targeting tween accessories stores such as Claire's and Fashion Bug.

Carole Postal, president of CopCorp Licensing, said that interest in the Dog of Glee design has broadened.

"We've started to see a lot more items for girls and juniors that really capture the strengths of the Dog of Glee property ..." she said.

Benton's properties are sold in stores as varied as Hot Topic and J.C. Penney. His other brands include It's Happy Bunny and Dear Dumb Diary.

More licensees have signed on since Jim Benton added phrases to his Just Jimmy property.
