Youth bedroom sales to reach nearly $5 billion by 2014

Youth bedroom sales are all geared up for a significant increase over the next five years.

By Daphne Garland-McLean -- Kids Today, 3/1/2010 12:00:00 AM

Youth bedroom sales are all geared up for a significant increase over the next five years. According to the statisticians at New York-based Easy Analytic Software Inc. (EASI), youth bedroom sales will improve by 14.8% between 2009 and 2014. That's a boost in sales from $4.3 billion in 2009 to $4.9 billion in 2014.

EASI's forecasts are based on projected changes in population within the various regions, along with their accompanying shifts in income. Changes in local economic conditions, such as unemployment and/or store closings are not taken into account. The predictions also assume a national rate of inflation that does not change among the varied locations.

Regionally, the most populous, the West and the South, are set to grow the fastest in youth bedroom sales. The West will generate sales of $1.1 billion by 2014, an increase of 17.3% over the five-year span. The South is expected to reach a growth rate of 17.0%. And while at a slower pace, the Midwest and Northeast are both expected to pull through with double-digit growth over the next five years. The Midwest will achieve growth of 12.1% while the Northeast's youth bedroom sales will expand at a rate of 10.7%.

Twenty-one states are expected to grow faster than the national average of 14.8% according to the EASI data. The West will claim 13 out of the 21 states and the South contains the remaining eight states poised to grow the fastest.

Nevada will outpace all other states in youth bedroom sales, growing by 25.2% over the five-year period. Arizona, with a growth projection of 25.0%, Utah at 21.7%, Idaho at 21.2% and Texas at 20.1% round out the top five fastest-growing states for youth bedroom furniture. California matches the national average with expected growth of 14.8% but is more notable for its high volume of sales. California expects to increase youth bedroom sales from $477.3 million in 2009 to $548.1 million in 2014.

Overall, about one-third of all 939 metros are expected to exceed the national average of 14.8%. The Palm Coast, Fla. metro will top the charts in youth bedroom sales growth for the next five years. With a whopping 42.0% growth forecast, the Palm Coast area will grow faster than any other metro, large or small, if the EASI data holds true. Other fast-growing metros with growth rates at or above 30% include The Villages, Fla., with a growth rate of 35.3%, Fernley, Nev., at 35.2%, St. George, Utah, at 34.9% and the greater Raleigh, N.C. area with growth of 30.0%.

When looking at the metros that produce the greatest dollar volume of youth bedroom sales, the greater New York area is clearly the leading metro area with youth bedroom sales increasing to $293.5 million by 2014. On the other hand, while the volume may not be as substantial, the Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale, Ariz., metro is expected to have the highest growth rate of 27.5%, increasing from $59.5 million in 2009 to 75.9 million in 2014.
