Manufacturers put focus on design

Staff -- Kids Today, 10/1/2005 12:00:00 AM

Exhibitors at this month's High Point furniture market are paying attention to the details, as evidenced by this first look at show introductions. A sailboat was the inspiration for Vaughan's new nautical-style dresser, and TLS by Design's Sausalito chair features a striking, contemporary look. Also, several manufacturers are introducing products with teen-appeal, such as Lea Inds.' modern I-Room group with metallic accents and Gautier's X-Pad collection, which has a hip, versatile design.

Creative Images is offering two new prints designed to hold up against child's play. The prints feature a protective covering that can be wiped clean, and the canvas wrap is designed to prevent the sagging that can occur when little fingers poke the art. Retail prices start at about $65.

This design from Timeworks features two sweet kittens rushing to school as a mouse keeps watch from below. The 13-inch clock retails for about $65.

Judith Edwards Designs is launching its new nautical group in a distressed finish with rope stitching and stencil details.

The Sausalito children's chair is made of solid ash and features high-design styling. From TLS by Design, the chair retails for about $395.

Mystic Valley Traders is entering the juvenile market with two bedding collections, including Deanie, a girls group featuring a reversible comforter with a paisley motif.

Wicker accents give the new Megan collection from Dutailier an island feel. The unisex group includes a standard and convertible crib, and is available in about 25 finishes.

American Woodcrafters/Rockford Furniture's loft bed is designed for sleep, storage and study, and is a good choice for a small bedroom.

Celeste is a new collection from Newport Cottages. The line, which includes crib, changing dressers, armoires, six drawer chest and nightstand, is available in 21 finishes.

Racing Furniture is showing its Tony Stewart NASCAR kid's recliner, which is part of its Race Room series. The chair has a wood frame, steel recliner mechanism and is covered in red and black microfiber. The retail price is about $99.

CapelKidz' Playtime collection features 100% wool yarns that are hand-tufted in India. Bug Off is one of six designs, and a 5-by-8-foot rug retails for $498.

Zocalo's rattan pod chair has a post-modern design that blends in with other pieces in its teen-oriented Z-Generation collection. The chair retails for $199.

The Scoop Zebra chair is part of Rush Inds.' TwixTween collection. The chair has a wood and spiral wound construction and has hip, furry animal prints or solid seat covers.

The X-Pad collection from Gautier is designed for functionality in a small space. The bed has an optional storage unit underneath, and the desk has two folding flaps. The red bookcase can also double as a room divider. The collection includes 18 pieces with a retail price point of $1,999.

Best Chairs' Mitzi vanity seat is 18 inches in height, making it a perfect chair for little ones. The skirt is accented with double cording, and the seat back is pleated at the corners.

Good Cos.' Analise series has a crème speckle finish. The group as shown retails for $999.

Vaughan Furniture's nautical-style collection showcases many details of a sailboat, including the design of the surface top and the metal drawer pulls. The dresser and mirror retail for about $599 together.

Storage is the name of the game with Creative Interiors' Sweet Dreams collection. The bed offers space in both the headboard and underneath the bed. The seven-piece group is finished in Starlight white.

American Lifestyles/Tennessee Enterprises is showing several styles of its solid oak children's rockers, including this one featuring a wheel design along the chair back.

Dynamic Furniture's contemporary group is finished in a natural maple laminate. The drawer panels can be reversed to show either a blue or white side, or they can be removed to keep the maple look throughout.

Hooker Furniture is releasing two new cottage collections — Chelsea's Place for girls and Mariners Landing for boys. Here, the Chelsea's Place armoire is shown in white and retails for $899.

The Farmhouse bed, part of Young America's new Cottage Cove collection, features substantial turned posts. The bed is also available in cinnamon.

Opus Designs is showing a new girls group in a very light gray finish with emulsion. The canopy bed retails for $499, and the oval nightstand with backsplash is $199.
