Order Kids Today Top 15 RetailersThe nation's 15 largest kids retailers recorded $9.83 billion in sales last year, representing a drop of 3.2% from the 2008 total of $10.16 billion.
Of the Top 15, only five posted a gain in their kids home furnishings sales, not surprising given the overall state of the U.S. economy. Despite the economic tumult, though, the top nine stores on the list held onto their positions from a year ago. The Top 15 sold kids product through a combined 13,024 retail outlets.
Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart held onto the No. 1 position in 2009, despite posting a 4.1% decline. The big box giant ended 2008 with 3,550 total stores and kids home furnishings sales of $3.12 billion. Wal-Mart alone accounts for more than 30% of the overall total.
No. 2-ranked Target posted a 6.5% sales decline for the year, despite opening 58 new stores during 2009. Its total kids sales were $1.59 billion, down from $1.7 billion in 2008. For the complete article, see the July/August print article, or click here to order our exclusive electronic report.
