Sophisticated Looks, Palettes, Emerge in Today's Youth Bedding

For those moms who don't want their kids' rooms to turn into a sea of licensed characters, increasingly sophisticated looks and palettes are popping up everywhere for youth bedding.
For girls, bright shades of fuchsia, lime, orange and turquoise continue to be strong colors, and blending textures and patterns creates a customized look. Classic girl motifs like polka dots and flowers remain popular choices, and embellishments like ruffled edges or embroidery create depth and interest.
CoCaLo has had success with the recent introduction of its Couture collection, which includes both infant and youth options, including Harlow, a sophisticated girls' group.
The collection is one of the company's top-sellers in crib bedding, and Marketing Manager Elina Rodina said the youth bedding is a way for parents to keep the same look of the room when it's time to move to a big-kid bed.
"It gives parents the ability to use the accessories they have and add new details to upgrade the room," said Rodina.
Boys' groups like Dwell Studio's new Skyline collection or Doodlefish's new doginspired line offer options beyond the triedand-true sports themes.

Dwell's Skyline collection utilizes popular shades of orange and turquoise with a twist on the transportation theme; accent pillows feature modern, blocky cars, but the real star is the series of buildings dancing across the duvet covers.
Doodlefish's line combines several of its signature fabrics, including Best Friend, Scottie Plaid, Maxwell Stripe and Chocolate Milk, to create a preppy boys group in rich colors and neutrals with dog silhouettes that are both playful and sophisticated.
"We're going to more graphic prints for boys," said Doodlefish co-owner Christine Senkiewicz.
Senkiewicz said grey is very popular for boys right now, as both an accent and even a primary color, as are rich browns and blues.
And Senkiewicz noted a trend in the way people are buying youth bedding, particularly boys' groups. With so many captain's beds, lofts and bunk beds being sold, many consumers are buying only a standard sham and a duvet, leaving out accessories like dust ruffles that won't work with the furniture.
"It's a cleaner look," said Senkiewicz, who also noted that many parents are choosing this option as a way to be a bit more frugal while still getting a high-quality item.
But custom bedding remains a huge part of her business.
"Especially at the mid- to high-end, people want to design it and own it and call it their own," said Senkiewicz.
High-end catalog and online retailer PoshTots recently announced that it is creating its own branded bedding, both infant and youth, and will be selling for the first time to wholesale customers.
"For years, we've been contacted by specialty boutiques wanting to carry a line of PoshTots-branded products," said founder Andrea Edmunds. "That dream is finally a reality."
The new bedding collections - between eight and 10 in all, plus custom options - are constructed from silks, cottons and cotton blends, and are being produced stateside in Virginia, with price points starting at $489 for a 3-piece set.
Lead designer Pam O'Hallaron has been working on the collections, which will make their debut in the 2011 print catalog in April.
