Dream on Me recalls 22,000 drop-side cribs

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Dream on Me, Inc., a supplier of cribs and other children's furniture, has voluntarily recalled 22,000 of its portable and full-size drop-side cribs made in China.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall last week in response to 69 reports of incidents involving the cribs.
The agency said that the drop-side hardware can break or fail on the full-size cribs. This creates a space between the drop-side and the crib mattress large enough for an infant or toddler's body to become entrapped, which in turn can lead to strangulation or suffocation. The space is also large enough to cause a child to fall out of the crib.
The agency reported that the drop-side hardware can also break or fail on the portable cribs. The portable crib mattress support hardware and the drop-side release can also break easily and the slats can loosen or break and detach from the crib, the agency said.
Consumers have been advised to stop using the recalled products immediately unless otherwise notified. The full-size cribs included in the recall are Models, 613, 615, 616, 617, 619, 628 and 639. The portable cribs included in the recall are Models 621, 625 and 627.
The products were sold at Toys R Us, Wal-Mart and Target stores in the U.S. and online at Amazon.com. The full-size cribs were sold from January 2006 to December 2009 for about $200, and the portable cribs were sold from September 2007 to December 2009 for about $150.
Starting on June 30, consumers will be given a free kit repair for the full-size cribs that will immobilize the drop-side. Starting in mid July, consumers can receive a free replacement portable crib with properly functioning drop-side rail hardware.
