AkzoNobel confirms talks to merge paints, coatings unit with Axalta

HIGH POINT – Global coatings specialist AkzoNobel N.V. has confirmed it is in discussions to merge its AkzoNobel Paints & Coatings Business with Axalta.

The company said such a deal would “create a leading global paints and coatings company through a merger of equals.”

It also said that the separation of its Specialty Chemicals unit, including the return of the vast majority of net proceeds to shareholders is on track for April 2018 and is not affected by the merger discussions.

Axalta Coating Systems was in the news this past spring when it purchased the North American Industrial Wood Coatings business of Valspar Corp. for an estimated $420 million.

Valspar divested this segment in response to regulatory concerns expressed by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and the Canadian Competition Bureau regarding Sherwin-Williams’ acquisition of Valspar Corp.

Sherwin Williams completed this acquisition June 1, the same day Axalta completed the purchase of Valspar’s industrial wood coatings business.

I'm Tom Russell and have worked at Furniture/Today since August 2003. Since then, I have covered the international side of the business from a logistics and sourcing standpoint. Since then, I also have visited several furniture trade shows and manufacturing plants in Asia, which has helped me gain perspective about the industry in that part of the world. As I continue covering the import side of the business, I look forward to building on that knowledge base through conversations with industry officials and future overseas plant tours. From time to time, I will file news and other industry perspectives online and, as always, welcome your response to these Web postings.
