Newport Cottages in larger facilty

Staff -- Kids Today, 10/1/2005

Riverside, Calif.— Juvenile furniture manufacturer Newport Cottages has moved to a larger plant here.

The high-end maker of cribs, beds and case goods moved offices and manufacturing to a building about a mile from its old location. The new facility is about 30,000 square feet, more than twice the size of its old plant.

"We have been waiting for several months for this new building to be completed," said President Pockets Alvarez. "It's been exciting redesigning the factory in order to maximize efficiencies and the flow of materials."

Alvarez said growth and a desire to keep production in the United States spurred the need for a larger plant.

"This investment is another step to further our commitment to manufacturing domestically," he said. "The high-end market we cater to and the specialized finishes that are involved require us to produce our product here in the United States."

Alvarez said the new plant will follow a Japanese-based approach to manufacturing that aims to eliminate waste during production. He expects production to increase dramatically during the next few months.
