Upscale nurseries look to the past

Classic styling, vintage designs give pieces heirloom quality

Tanya K. Merritte -- Kids Today, 1/1/2006

High-end infant furniture seems to typically fall into two vastly different categories. One category is composed of pieces constructed to fit in with the modern, high-design homes of many of today's young parents. These pieces often feature clean lines, a low profile and minimal fuss.

But some parents desire nursery looks that remind them of days gone by, and the high-end designs profiled here fit the bill — cribs with tall posts, hand-painted designs, vintage patterns, intricate detailing. All these elements combine to offer classic, timeless looks that can be passed down through the generations. This handiwork and attention to detail doesn't come cheap, but for discriminating parents about to decorate their first nursery, price is often not a top priority.

A vintage circus theme in soft colors is one of the latest designs from All Things Creative. The retail price is $1,150.

Tall ends give Corsican's iron crib an elegant flair. The retail price is $2,200.

Mosaicwares' Babes at Home collection includes a crib with an oval cameo design and a changer with a handy upper drawer.

Sweet Beginnings' Serengeti four-drawer/changer is hand-painted in warm tones. The retail price is $5,000.

Martinek Baby's Princess of Monaco collection is finished in a custom pink shade and coordinates with bedding of the same name.

Newport Cottage's poster cottage crib is show in a bold red.

Bratt Décor's Chelsea collection includes a substantial sleigh crib with inlaid carvings and European styling. Remove the rails, and the crib transitions to a toddler bed.
