Olivia & Will's castle furniture makes debut

Tanya K. Merritte -- Kids Today, 6/1/2006

A Southern California father introduced a bedroom collection fit for a princess at last month's JPMA show in Orlando.

Olivia and Will's Fine Children's Furniture debuted with a high-end collection of beds and case pieces for girls, dubbed the Princess collection. Fred Golightly, designer and president of the company, said his young daughter, Olivia, was the inspiration for the line. Golightly said she had fallen in love with all things princess, and he looked for find bedroom furniture that fit that theme. After having no success, Golightly, a public relations executive, decided to create his own. "I said "I'd like to make my daughter's first bed," he said.

The signature piece in the Princess line is the four-poster castle bed, which includes three-dimensional towers with lights on the headboard. The all-hardwood bed features round posts, carved details designed to resemble a castle's exterior stonework and a crystal crown. The twin bed with headboard and footboard retails for about $3,000. The full bed retails for about $3,500. Both are finished in portrait white and offered with pink, lavender or purple molding.

An assortment of furniture also bowed, including a five-drawer vanity desk, vanity dresser, eight-drawer dresser and cushioned stepstool. The pieces, which range in price between $400 and $3,000, are finished in portrait white and have a metallic gold trim and crystal-like drawer pulls.

Golightly also showed a boy's castle bed finished in blue with a gray trim. Instead of a crown in the headboard, Golightly will add a family crest — he would just need the child's last name. Plans are in the works to add case goods to round out the boy's line.

Golightly designed the domestically made groups to be family heirlooms. "I want my daughter to give it to her daughter," he said.

The Princess collection already has started shipping to specialty furniture stores in Southern California.

The Princess bed retails for about $3,000 and includes a full crown in the headboard.
