Recalls

Staff -- Kids Today, 8/1/2006

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating five consumer complaints that the handle on the Evenflo Embrace rear-facing infant car seat designed for children between 5 and 22 pounds unexpectedly fails.

In four of the five consumer complaints, the handle "unexpectedly unlatched and one complaint reports the handle release lever fell out of the handle on one side," according to the NHTSA.

The agency also reports that a review of Evenflo's submission of early warning reporting data has identified field reports of handle latch problems on Embrace seats.

The car seat is sold at Wal-Mart, independent retailers and online.

In other recall news, Small World Toys is recalling about 92,000 toy vehicles because of a choking hazard.

The recalled toys include the IQ Baby Pillow Soft Activity Blocks, IQ Baby Travelin' Train Blocks, IQ Baby Vroom Vroom Vehicles and Discovery Channel Vroom Vroom Vehicles.

The plastic wheels on the toys can detach, posing a choking hazard to young children.

Small World Toys has received 11 reports of incidents in which a wheel detached from one of these toys. No injuries have been reported.

The items were sold at toy stores and other retailers nationwide, as well as through catalogs.

The Discovery Channel Vroom Vroom Vehicles were sold at Discovery Channel stores nationwide and online.

The recall is being conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Additional recent recalls:

  • Tiffany and Co., New York, is voluntarily recalling about 47 Paloma rattles. Seams on the rattle can open during use, releasing small round beads. The beads can pose an aspiration hazard to young children. The breakage also can create ragged edges on the ring, posing a laceration hazard.
  • Adjmi Apparel Group, New York, is voluntarily recalling about 55,000 Reebok children's windsuits. The Reebok logo appliqué on the clear rubber zipper pull on the jacket can detach, posing a choking or aspiration hazard to young children.
  • Simon & Schuster, New York, is voluntarily recalling about 9,000 "Curious Buddies" children's books. The felt ears and limbs on the pop-up characters can detach or come apart when pulled, which may pose a choking hazard to young children.
  • KI, also known as Kole Imports, Carson, Calif., is voluntarily recalling about 3,600 packages of two pacifiers. The pacifier's nipple can easily detach from the guard, posing a serious choking hazard to young children.
  • Regal Lager, Kennesaw, Ga., is voluntarily recalling about 425 Phil & Teds e3 Twin Buggy strollers.

The plastic hinge on the handlebar can crack or break causing the handlebar to detach while in use. This poses a risk of injury to young children.
