Retailer income drops 8.9% in quarter

By Janice Chamberlain -- Kids Today, 10/1/2006

As juvenile home furnishings retailers head into the all-important year-end selling season, they must be crossing their fingers that the holiday period will bring them the gift of profits missing from the second quarter.

Aggregate sales for the 13 companies on this edition of the Kids Today quarterly retail scorecard grew 9.4% to $122.9 billion from year-ago results of $112.4 billion, but net income sank to $3.1 billion, off from $3.4 billion, an 8.9% drop.

While just over half — seven companies — managed to improve their profit position over the second quarter of 2005, those gains were quickly exceeded by declining profits or increasing deficits at the other six.

Wal-Mart took the biggest earnings hit, recording a 25.7% earnings decline on profits of $2.1 billion. Most of Wal-Mart's earnings problems stemmed from one-time charges related to their decision to exit the South Korean and German markets. Wal-Mart blew past the rest in dollar revenue growth, adding more than $8.7 billion to finish the latest quarter with sales registers ringing up $85.4 billion.

Toys "R" Us reduced its red ink to $110 million, compared with $359 million last year. Sears Holding may have finally gotten its arms around its Kmart-Sears, Roebuck merger, posting a profit increase of $133 million, or 82.6%, quarter over quarter.

The largest percentage gain in revenues once again belonged to Baby Universe, up 61.3% to $8.5 million from $5.3 million a year ago. The online company continues to benefit from its Jan. 13 acquisition of Posh Tots, another online retailer.

Kids Today's second-quarter retailer scorecard is based on the financial results of 13 juvenile retailers companies with fiscal quarters ending from June 30 to Aug. 26. Joining the scorecard is Big Lots, No. 14 on Kids Today's ranking of top retailers.
