Kids Retail Innovators

Staff -- Kids Today, 11/1/2006

Retailing is one of the toughest jobs out there and when you do it right, you deserve recognition. With that in mind, Kids Today debuts its annual Retail Innovators list. We solicited responses throughout the industry and limited the list to 20 stores who think outside the box or have a different spin and raise the retail bar. The list is not a ranking, but rather a recognition for a job well done.

The retailers on this list do more than stock their floors and shelves with product. The Baby's Room in Norcross, Ga., has a "men's club" room with recliners and TVs so Dad can relax while Mom shops. Child of Mine has set up a Science Scholarship program and is starting baby signing classes in its store. Kidspace in Amarillo, Texas, makes dream vignettes for its customers complete with rainforest murals and sounds. Starlight Baby is housed in a barn in New England and Magic City Kids is the only independent children's store in Billings, Mont. The ideas and ingenuity go on and on.

How the list was compiled

Kids Today's exclusive report, Retail Innovators, presents snapshots of independent kids home furnishings retailers that are using innovating approaches to marketing and merchandising and are making a difference in their communities.

This list is by no means comprehensive. Many more than the 20 kids specialists listed here are strong retailers within their communities.

Nor is the listing a ranking like Kids Today's Top 20 retailers. Companies that rank on our Top 20 were not eligible for this listing.

Because sales volumes are of interest, however, Kids Today does provide sales estimates for the Innovators. All sales figures and ranges are Kids Today market research estimates and are for total 2006 store sales, which may include revenues from the sale of products other than kids home furnishings, such as apparel and toys. Where possible, the percentage of sales from kids products is given. All sales figures and store counts are for the calendar year 2006.

Kids Today compiled this report by surveying independent retailers, researching business newspaper archives and speaking with industry insiders. Information was gathered, compiled and analyzed by Editor Lisa Casinger and Senior Research Specialist Dana French, with assistance from Database Coordinator Cynthia Myers and Research Assistant Patrice Rahming.
