High Point vendors turn to mod & girly glam

Staff -- Kids Today, 4/1/2007

High Point Market was filled with everything from modern looks for tweens/teens and girly glam silhouettes to a nod to would-be pirates.

Canyon, which is owned by Top 100 retailer Rooms to Go, opened up distribution of four Disney lines, including Winnie the Pooh, Cars, Pirates of the Caribbean and The Princess collection. It also started offering four other RTG top sellers including a merlot contemporary group, a mission group and a baseball-themed bed.

Opus Designs also added a contemporary look to its line, but the bigger news is the company added bunk beds to each of its existing collections.

"Customers were asking for bunk beds so we brought them out in all groups," said James Millner, president product design and development.

Millner was particularly pleased with the early reception of the contemporary collections, Counterpoint, a light finish and Aura, a dark finish.

Powell moved all of its youth collections to the first floor of its showroom, a prominent position indicating the company's growing commitment to the category. Aside from the Bauble Girls collection, Powell also bowed Cameron, a camouflage-themed metal group and Shiver Me Timbers, a 12-piece collection featuring a fun boat-shaped bunk, rope details and peg leg posts on desks and chairs, all in a honey brown, antique oak finish.

"We have about nine groups now," said John Conrad, vice president of merchandising, "And we wanted to show the push we've made in youth. We've done very well with themed groups."

Corsican's new collection of iron race-themed beds includes this twin featuring three molded cars against a decal background and checkered flag finials, $1,925.

Young America debuted GenAmerica, a collection featuring a combination of traditional and more contemporary pieces, including the low platform bed in a merlot finish with metal trim and under bed storage, $789.

The Trenches from Creative Images features a football team in motion in dusty shades of blue, red, green and white. The 36″ × 18″ canvas retails between $64 and $146, depending on the framing option selected.

Lite Source's table lamp has a house as the base for a whimsical look that could work in second or vacation homes, $118.

Counterpoint and Aura are Opus Design's nod to modern youth looks. Counterpoint is a light finish and Aura is a dark merlot. The collection includes three bed configurations, night stands, dressers and a drum-shaped armoire, $999, all with brushed metal accents.

Zocalo has added a four-post storage bed to its Sterling Park collection. The bed is made of cherry veneers and poplar solids and can be used with optional drawers on casters, allowing access from either side of the bed, $599.

Canyon Furniture is sure to spark the imagination of budding pirates with its Pirate bed, part of its new The Pirates collection based on Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean." The bed, $999, comes in a black finish with plenty of hidden storage nooks and an attached toy chest at the "bow" of the bed (topped off with a pirate flag and mast). There are 14 SKUs rounding out the collection, which is available in a soft brown finish.

Bauble Girls from Powell features a colorful jewel motif on the end panels and rails that coordinate with metal pieces with strawberry pink, silver, mint green and pastel orange accents.

Prescott is the latest debut from SLF. The country shaker design features a twin or full sleigh bed, panel bed and a bunk bed with twin over twin or twin over full option, $700. There are about 15 pieces in this honey pine group including a smaller armoire and under bed storage.

Dinosaurs roam across the upholstered headboard of Skyline Furniture's debut. The upholstered bed, $499, has under bed storage and is available in all sizes and can be sent via UPS.

Pulaski added Libearty to its popular Build-A-Bear Home collection. The 25-piece debut comes with four panels in wood finishes — tan, mahogany, black and brown — enabling the user to customize the drawer fronts. The loft bed, $1,499, shows the color panels on the built-in dresser.
