Dwell partners with seating, wall art manufacturers

Staff -- Kids Today, 9/1/2007

Home textiles manufacturer Dwell, known for its contemporary modern designs, has teamed up with two other companies for deals that expand its product portfolio.

Dwell has partnered with British company Graham & Brown for a line of wall canvases. The 12 hand-screened canvases, designed by Dwell, can be used singly or in different combinations. Panel designs feature animals, geometric shapes and modern icons, and the color palette includes bright yellow, turquoise, pink and berry. The panels are offered in two sizes — 22″ × 22,″ which retail for $80, and 22″ × 26,″ which retail for $85.

Christiane Lemieux, creative director for Dwell, said the designs and colors are a takeoff on vintage Danish and Italian toys.

"We have always done whole interiors for our catalogs and realized that the wall canvases are the ideal way to finish the modern nursery," Lemieux said.

Dwell has also signed a licensing deal with Netherlands-based Fatboy. The company, which makes bean bag seating with a modern flair, has designed two pieces for Dwell. The rectangular Original, which is 70″ × 55″ and retails for $299, can function as a lounge bag, pillow bed or armchair. The dot-shaped Point, which measures 20″ × 14″ and retails for $129, can serve as a stool, cushion or footrest. Both are covered in fabric patterns from Dwell, such as oversized dots that reverse to stripes.

"We feel strongly that manufacturers with whom we collaborate have the same philosophy of product, and that we share design values about quality, material and color," Lemieux said. "And while this new alliance clearly shares these values, it is also in sync with the message that Dwell has been expressing from the beginning — furniture and fabrics can be designed for children without being childish."

Dwell is targeting both lines towards high-end specialty shops and design stores that carry merchandise for baby, kids or adult. Product is scheduled to begin shipping in November. Products from both Graham & Brown and Fatboy will be exhibited in Dwell's booth at the ABC Expo in Las Vegas this month.
