Juvenile products distributor Regal Lager has received an award for instituting a program designed to encourage a more active lifestyle for its employees.
The Golden Carrot is given out by the Atlanta Journal Constitution as part of the newspaper’s Better Health program. According to a press release, the award recognizes organizations, schools and individuals who encourage and work toward healthy living.
Regal Lager employees took part in the American Heart Association’s START program, which asks participants to get 30 minutes of exercise a day. Employees participated by walking, with many walking 1.3 miles around the company’s office in Kennesaw, Ga., during their lunch breaks and after work. At the end of the 11-week challenge, the top employee was Monica Eklund, customer care representative/returns, who logged 4,550 minutes of activity.
Luanne Whiting-Lager, vice president of Regal Lager, said the idea came about after a bowling outing left many workers with sore muscles. “I realize that most of us in the office have busy lives, and unfortunately, we sometimes neglect our health,” she said.
Whiting-Lager said she was pleasantly surprised by the company participation. “This is just the beginning,” she said. “Many of the staff members have found exercise partners to work with and we will continue to support our employees in achieving their health goals.”
