JPMA responds to recent safety concerns of umbrella strollers

-- Kids Today, 11/17/2009 9:03:00 AM

Editor's note: JPMA has issued the following statement following an extensive recall of umbrella strollers. This is the opinion of JPMA.

MOUNT LAUREL, N.J.—The Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association, the not for profit trade association that promotes infant safety and the development of recognized ASTM International product safety standards, reassures the public regarding the safety of properly used, portable “umbrella” strollers.

Portable folding strollers are widely used in the United States and have provided convenience, comfort and safety in transporting millions of children. Properly used, they can keep children out of harm’s way.

JPMA supports the recent voluntary recall of umbrella strollers as it demonstrates a commitment to ensuring safe use of products and taking the necessary steps to ensure the safety of children.

JPMA members strive to produce high quality, safe products that comply with all relevant industry standards while consumers take the responsibility to safely operate and use those products according to the instructions and guidance in product packaging. When we both do this successfully we create a safer environment for our children.

JPMA continually works with all of the industry, consensus standard setting bodies, government representatives and safety advocates to improve the quality and safety of nursery products sold in the United States. Independent standards organizations and the safety standards developed in cooperation with industry experts, result in some of the best hazard-based standards that ensure today’s parents may be comfortably secure in the safe use and selection of their juvenile products.

As with all consumer products it is important to follow the manufacturer’s assembly and use instructions. This recall should serve as a reminder to all consumers to regularly check their products to ensure that they are properly assembled and used.

While there is no substitute for proper adult supervision, the following are a few safety guidelines to always remember when using your

stroller:

  • Always secure the baby by using the restraint straps.
  • Don’t hang pocketbooks or shopping bags over the handles of the carriage or stroller. If your stroller has a shopping basket for carrying packages, it should be low on the back of the stroller or directly over the rear wheels.
  • Use the locking device to prevent accidental folding.
  • Apply the brakes to limit rotation of the wheels when stroller is stationary.
  • When you fold or unfold the stroller, keep the baby’s hands away from the areas that could pinch tiny fingers.
