Young America says its drop-side cribs are safe

Editor’s Note: As a drop-side crib manufacturer, Young America issued the following statement after Stork Craft’s recall of 2.1 million cribs:

STANLEYTOWN, Va. – Infant, youth and second bedroom furniture producer, Young America, is reassuring retailers and consumers that all Young America drop-side cribs are of the highest quality and exceed all of the industry’s safety standards.

The press release issued by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the voluntary recall of more than 2.1 million Stork Craft drop-side cribs for infant entrapment and suffocation hazards. According to the CPSC, the targeted Stork Craft cribs’ drop-side plastic hardware can break, deform, or parts can become missing. In addition, the drop-side can be installed upside-down, which can result in broken or disengaged plastic parts – all resulting in a space which can lead to entrapment, suffocation and/or falls.

Naturally, the recall has resulted in a surge of inquiries from Young America retailers and consumers. According to Kevin Walker, the company’s vice president of product development, “All Young America drop-side cribs have been third party certified to exceed all CPSC safety standards. Young America has always used the highest quality hidden hardware drop-side systems available in the industry. The source for the entrapment and suffocation-related injuries and deaths has been due to certain manufacturers’ use of low cost, low quality exposed plastic hardware.”

According to the brand’s Web site, all Young America cribs are tested to strict manufacturing safety standards, and an independent testing lab is used to ensure design integrity.

Young America exceeds all CPSC and JPMA regulations as well as ASTM voluntary standards. The infant and youth furniture brand is also in the process of creating its own branded set of safety standards surpassing even the most stringent mandatory or voluntary product safety guidelines.

“All of these steps are designed to ensure that every Young America crib is the safest it can be for infants,” added Walker.

As with all Young America cribs, he stressed that proper assembly and care will ensure continued functionality and safety. He urged parents and infant caregivers to visit youngamerica.com/instructions for detailed assembly instructions and instructional videos for Young America cribs.
