Inspiration and motivation
June 29, 2007

Reading Kelly's blog last week before I went to the Kids Today conference I found myself also wondering about what motivates me to do my job.

My first and foremost would have to be that I'm a writer, I need to write, to express myself. I'd love to say I don't work for a paycheck, but c'mon folks, this is reality--we all expect to get paid for what we do.

I've been in/around the furniture industry for around 10 years now and in publishing for about 16; my first job in the industry was in the marketing department for a furniture manufacturer. I quickly realized I didn't like writing marketing materials and got a job as the editor for the National Home Furnishings Association's magazine. Our focus was retailers. I fell in love.

When I came to work for Reed Business as the retail editor for Home Accents Today it was a natural fit. Retailers were my kind of people. I'm constantly amazed by stories of how they started their businesses, how they've survived and how they come up with creative ideas to keep their customers coming back again and again.

Last week at the Kids Today conference I got my own dose of motivation and inspiration. The agenda wasn't designed for me obviously, it was designed to be helpful for the manufacturers and retailers in attendance. However, it pumped me up too. Maybe it was because it went so well and people seemed to enjoy the content. Maybe it was because the speakers were incredibly interesting and entertaining. I don't know the answer but I walked away with a feeling of hopefulness, a shot of excitement and the desire to make the magazine even better than before.
