Who trips your trigger?
January 8, 2008

As I'm finalizing our agenda for the Playing for Keeps Kids Today conference (registration is filling up so sign up here if you haven't already) this question keeps popping up and, admittedly, I don't have all the answers.

Who are the retailers everyone wants to know about? Who are the WOW retailers? There are some store names that always surface in our industry, BuyBuyBaby, Babies "R" Us, Goore's, Kids Stuff, Baby Love, Baby's & Kid's 1st Furniture, Stork Land, giggle, Kidspace, Stacy's Kid Stuff, Lullaby Lane...the list goes on.

The question is, who do YOU think is a WOW retailer? I've thought about it and it's not even a matter of who or what do you aspire to because you can appreciate someone's business or talent without wanting to morph into them.

As a writer I've always admired Stephen King, but I don't want to be Stephen King. His writing can scare me to death and that has to come from a strange kind of brain and if I had that brain I'd most likely be hospitalized. I think Real Simple is a beautiful consumer magazine and I read it cover to cover when I have time. I also like Family Fun and think that one day my kids and I will actually make one of the crafts. I can appreciate those magazines for what they are.

Which retailers do you appreciate?

Well, I've never been to his store, but Philip Gangi of Cullen's Playpen is my hero because of the way he hog-tied a shoplifter! Go, Gangi, go!!!
