Retail therapy
July 3, 2007
I've always thought I'm not the typical female shopper mainly because I don't really like to shop. When I'm shopping I like to go in, get what I need and get out — most of the time. My husband is the reverse. He likes to walk down each aisle, regardless of the type of store.
Our keynote speaker at the Kids Today conference, Rebecca Maddox, said that women shop with a retailer based on trust, like and price and men shop based on price, like then trust. On this point I agree whole-heartedly.
Randy Eller, another speaker, said people shop because of the retail experience and cited Apple, Starbucks and Verizon stores.
The things I like about the stores I frequent are that they are clean, the employees are friendly and helpful without being stalkers and I don't feel rushed. I can stroll at my leisure if I want. I can linger and look. I also have to admit that I do think about the company and it's corporate policy, how it treats employees, what it does for charities, etc. It makes me feel good that a store I shop cares about people.
Since I'm not a power shopper I don't go out of my way to get to a store, so it has to be convenient. Sadly, the small town I live in has few independent stores.
