The reality of recalls?
October 15, 2007

It seems just about every day Tanya and I get a handful of recall notices in our email in boxes. When I first came to Kids Today these alarmed me, and they still do to some degree, both professionally speaking and as a parent. But, they do make me wonder if parents are so used to hearing about recalls that they don't really pay attention to them anymore.

While I realize the importance of notifying the public when a product fails or is dangerous or has lead, etc. sometimes I think we (the public) expect too much from retailers and manufacturers when it comes to safety. Yes, we want a safe product, we want to know it's not toxic or lethal, but when it comes to common sense use I think in some cases parents need to pay better attention and buy more age appropriate or child appropriate products.

Retailers--what happens in stores when there's a massive recall? Are consumers alarmed? Do they ask you questions?

Manufacturers--even if your product isn't one being recalled, do consumers start calling you?

I'm curious as to just how wide-spread and alarming recalls are. What is the reality of recalls?
