Discounts For Multiples
April 17, 2008

Most baby stores offer some sort of discount for parents of multiples.  Some big box stores offer 10% off most items purchased for multiple children as long as they're purchased at the same time.  It is tougher for a specialty retailer to offer this "across the board" discount because of tighter margins and higher overhead.  We offer 10% off the second crib and the second mattress.  While we do not allow coupons to be combined with the multiples discount, most parents will find coupons to use on the other major items that they need for their babies.

I was just curious as to what sort of discounts or incentives you offer to parents of multiples.  Do you meet what the big box stores offer?  How can you?  I find that one of the many products that we offer more selection on is double strollers.  Not only do we have a better selection than the big box, but we have knowledgeable staff who can help the mom select the proper stroller for her needs.  Big box can't offer that in the way that we can.

Another thing that I've noticed is that, because many of our moms are middle-aged and not newly weds, most of our multiples are a result of fertilization treatments.  These moms go through so much to get pregnant in the first place that they are not going to settle for big box baby gear.  As a result, the multiples discount is not as much of a requirement by expectant mothers in our store.  At our other location, however, where the moms tend to be younger, the discount is a big deal... even if we do have a better selection.

Anyone who can relate?  Let me know...
