Economic Stimulus Checks
June 25, 2008
I know lots of families are looking forward to or have just received their economic stimulus checks from the U.S. government. What percentage, though, are consumers really planning on spending in retail stores?
I know that my check is going toward bills and debts. Many people I know are also using the stimulus money to pay for previous expenditures. I do not believe that these checks will provide quite the desired effect the government had intended.
I do think, though, that if anyone in retail is going to see a boost from the economic stimulus checks, it will be the juvenile products industry. Parents guilt themselves into believing that they are somehow not sufficiently providing for their children, particularly when they are financially struggling. Of this charge, I am guilty.
Expectant parents may also see the stimulus checks as an opportunity to prepare more thoroughly for the arrival of their little ones. These families may buy items in preparation rather than desperation, in other words buying products in the case that they need them, not because they need them right away. I can see this benefiting us greatly in the short term and slightly in the long term.
What are you going to do with your check?
