Customers have social needs, too
July 25, 2007

I have known for years that some customers come into our store just to "hang out" or "kill time" but I have finally found documentation as to why that may be so.  I was cruising "Cafe Mom" online and ran across a journal titled "Adult Withdrawl?"  As suspected, sometimes moms (and particularly stay-at-home-moms) just need some social contact.  I find that when these moms are in the store they will strike up conversations with other willing moms.  They often will exchange information or arrange play dates right then and there.

I feel very pleased with the fact that my store can facilitate such a social outreach for these moms.  There is something very satisfying with knowing that when they thought of a safe and sane environment to meet new people, they thought of us.  I would encourage everyone to be respectful of this practice.  It's tough being a mom and not knowing where to turn.  I was blessed enough to have my customers when my daughter was a baby.  Not everyone is lucky enough to be a new mom working in a baby store so they'll usually take the next best thing... hanging out in a baby store!
