Retirement... Our Great Loss
August 22, 2007

I am still in a state of denial (awaiting my state of mourning) almost one week after the retirement of our warehouse man, Langford Henry.  Link, as most of us call him, was with New Baby Products from the beginning.  He was close with my Grandma Edna, who was killed before I was born.  He would often tell me stories of the "good ole' days" with my family including Grandma Edna.  He was also at the store when I was there in my Johnny Jump Up.  He watched my family grow and change and really became a member of the family himself.

Link also knew our warehouse, our merchandise, and our customers backward and forward.  If it was broken and it could be fixed, Link was the man for the job.  If it would fit in a customer's Volkswagen Beetle, he'd be the one to get it in.  Link was a hard worker; eager to help and eager to stay busy.  He had a great since of humor and an incredible work ethic.  He stayed with New Baby Products for 38 years.  I have a philosophy that no employee is completely irreplaceable but some are definitely harder to replace than others.  They just don't make employees like him anymore.  He is skinny as a rail but just as strong as an ox.  I've seen that man lift enormous pieces of furniture by himself (and over the age of 60 when doing so!)  He was a great asset to our company and will be greatly missed!

Post Script:
Link Henry waited until his last week at work to tell me that his "Mama" was still alive and well.  He had told me that I was not allowed to make "yo mama" jokes with him because his mom was gone to heaven.  He got the last laugh after all!!!

Kelly, First of all, I enjoy reading your blog. I was upset to hear of Mr. Link's retirement. You are correct in your assumption that he is a rare type of person. I remember as a young boy helping my father deliver mattress to New Baby and meeting link. We will all miss Link and wish him the best in retirement. As another family owned company, there are many employees who have been here for years and who are thought of as family.

Dennis, you DO know how hard it is and how special Link is to us! It's heart-warming to hear others, outside of New Baby, speak so fondly of him. I appreciate the comment and will pass it along the next time I see him!
