Customers Who Need More Than Baby Products... They Need Reassurance
January 7, 2008

I have found that sometimes my expectant customers want more than just advice on baby products.  Sometimes moms-to-be feel so overwhelmed by their circumstances that they just want someone to tell them that they're doing a great job in preparing for their little one.  Yes, this sounds like a job for dad, but people like all the encouragement they can get.  It also makes a difference in a customer's attitude when I can be reassuring because, in the eyes of the customer, I am the expert (and the husband may not be in this case.)  If a customer confides her fears about parenting in me, it is my responsibility to assure the customer that her instincts will "kick in" and that everyone is scared of parenting.

Think about this.  You are responsible for sheltering, feeding, clothing, protecting, educating, and inspiring a brand new human being when you become a parent.  If this child is seen as a failure, then you, too, will be perceived as a failure for the endurance of the child's life.  On top of the immense pressure, expectant mothers have all sorts of hormones raging which causes "nesting".  This drive is a simple Darwinian instinct to promote survival and successful living for the up and coming child.

Always keep a positive attitude with your customer in relation to their acheivements and provide as much assistance as possible in their transition from childless to parent.  A few nurturing words can go a long way.
