Give Your Store Product Flow
November 8, 2007

A customer of mine brought to my attention the issue of "product flow" in merchandising.  She said that one of our stores had "flow" and the other did not.  The fact that the products were not laid out in some sort of sequential order caused her anxiety in that location.

I was at the "no-flow" store today and saw, first hand, to what she had referred.  After re-modeling that store, the merchandise had been reassembled nicely on new racks, shelves, slat walls, etc.  Those who organized the "new and improved" store had failed to realize the necessity of "flow", that is, product transition and overall structure.

I spent the day today pulling down perfectly good displays to relocate merchandise.  I have yet to finish but already products seem to flow seamlessly together.  A customer can "graze" calmly on a product in the front and soon find themselves perusing the back of the store.  It is imperative to make the store a stress-free and enjoyable experience.  I believe honest customers, like the woman who told me of her anxiety, have much to offer if we'll only listen.  Have you listened to your customers lately?
