New Baby Products Food Fight
May 16, 2008
It is imperative that, as a local business, we find a way to give back to our community. This is a concept that has been handed down through my family by my own grandfather who grew up in a poor Kentucky farming community. Grandpa worked hard for everything he's ever had and has always gone the extra mile to help others in need.
In my county newspaper there was a recent article profiling a humanitarian organization that helps provide families with food. The article stated that the non-profit group only had enough canned goods to last half way through the summer. This time of year, they typically have enough food to last them through the holidays. The article offered information for contribution of canned goods to this local food bank.
Mom showed me the article to get me to gather people to collect cans. Krystal and I came up with the idea of the New Baby Products Food Fight. In the food fight, each store would collect canned goods for 3 weeks. At the end of the 3 week period, the cans would be counted and the store with the most cans would have lunch provided by the store. Well, here we are, at the end of the 3 weeks. Tomorrow is our big can count... and it's big!
The two stores started out very close. The Snellville store edged ahead for a while but we're back to being very, very close. I already know who wins, though. There are two winners, actually. The first, of course, is the organization to whom all the cans will be donated. The second winner, though, is all of our staff. The Food Fight has helped to promote a sense of team spirit and unity amongst each stores' staff members. We have raised morale and helped our community all at the same time. Regardless of who has the most cans, we are all winners.
What can your business do to contribute to your community? Can you come up with a creative way to help others and boost morale amongst your staff? I challenge each of you to take up a cause, as a business, and give back to the very community that keeps your business alive and thriving. Most of all, have fun!
