High-End Stroller Fetishes
April 3, 2008

High-end strollers have been the rage for sometime now.  We are seeing trickle down from this trend to big box stores (i.e.: Babies R Us carries Bugaboo).  What next, then?

I had a dad today who was looking at the Peg Perego Skate stroller.  He was also looking at getting a Primo Viaggio car seat to go with it.  The baby is 2 months old.  Mom already has a Quinny Buzz and a Stokke XPlory.  She also has a Maxi Cosi Mico car seat.  Dad just wants his own high-end gear... and he wants something just as "hot" as Mom's 2 high-end strollers.

This couple is not the first to overdo the pricey gear.  I have another couple who are each getting their own Primo Viaggio car seats instead of getting an extra base.  Why?  Because they each want a different color.  At $250 per seat, I think I'd get the color I want and tell my husband to deal with it... extra base it is.  (Maybe this is why I don't have a husband.)

I have to say, I think the trend of "keeping up with the Joneses" has really gone to a new level.  It would not surprise me if some of these stroller-collectors return in the coming year for another high-end baby-ride.  It would also not surprise me if my own sister, Lindsay, is not finished with her own high-dollar collection.  I love how the Phil & Ted's sales rep catalog describes one of their strollers as "reassuringly expensive."  That's what the consumer wants, that's what we'll give them.
