Chewing Gum In The Work Place
June 30, 2008
Everyone knows it is typically unacceptable to chew gum in a retail setting. Imagine, though, that your customers have a hypersensitive sense of smell and that your employees, being full time, are eating lunch while at work. Even if employees take the time to brush their teeth after lunch, they may not be sporting the sweetest breath for the remainder of the work day.
In the church nursery where I volunteer on Sundays, the children's pastors actually provide chewing gum for the staff. The theory is that when a staff member greets a family, they should be as pleasant and welcoming as possible... and their breath should be, too.

I see the pros and cons to allowing employees to chew gum in a baby furniture store. It goes without saying that employees should never smack, chomp, or blow bubbles. We reserve the right to restrict gum chewing at any time as employers. It actually says in our employee manual that we are not allowed to have gum while on the sales floor. We will let it slide as long as employees are not abusing the priveledge. Our customers' pregnant noses appreciate this.
Do you allow gum chewing in your workplace?
