Training Day
February 8, 2008

Today has been moving quite quickly.  I have been training new employees all day.  With the new college semester under way, many of our full time employees have gone to part time positions.  I have 3 new girls who have all started within the last week and a half.  So far, everyone seems to be catching on well.  We've covered a great deal of metal goods and  most of the furniture.

Learning the lingo in a baby store is much like learning a foreign language.  The thing is, no matter how much you think you know coming in to a store like ours, you are bound to learn something.  I, myself, learn something new just about every single day at this job.  Training cannot be broken down into a few sessions over a few days.  Every day is a training day in our industry.  Every day is a day for employees to expand their knowledge and wisdom for the sake of the customers.

Sometimes training also involves un-training.  I have one employee who has worked before for a big box competitor.  While most new employees need extensive training on gear, she will need more training on specialty lines and the differences between the two types of stores.  There are also times that we have to un-train employees who are moms.  We, as mothers, have a tendency to limit our outlook to our own personal experiences.  While our experiences can serve as a great reference point, we have to remember that each family's needs are different.

Happy training to you all!
