Why Take The Time To Comment On Blogs?
September 17, 2007

Kids Today Online uses the blog format to promote open discussions within and about our industry.  For these blogs to reach their true potential, it is imperative for you, the reader, to participate in these discussions.  I know that we are all busy with our companies and that commenting does take a couple of minutes from your day.  What it also does, though, is opens new perspectives to me and to other readers.  It also lets me know that you are there... that you read and analyze, that you have an opinion whether it coincides with mine or not.

There are a few things I ask when formulating your comment.  First, I ask that you not mention company names in comments unless it is your company.  I have only broken this rule on one occasion and it's because I knew that it was not going to ruffle anyone's feathers.  Every manufacturer has a different relationship with each store.  A company that you adore may be a company that has done something negative to my store or vice versa.  For the sake of diplomacy, please adhere to this guideline.

Second, please don't use blog comments as shameless advertising for your brand.  If you want to advertise with Kids Today Online you can e-mail Lisa Casinger at LCasinger@ReedBusiness.com and buy an ad.  I think this one is pretty cut and dry.

Finally, be on your best behavior.  Not that I think any of you would do otherwise, but please be selective with your language and content.  This blog is for everyone in the industry and we need to keep it suitable for all audiences.  This is sometimes difficult when I'm in the mood to vent but if I can handle it, you can, too.

Don't forget to register and login before commenting with Kids Today Online.  Why do you have to do all of this?  The registration, login, and letter box at the bottom of the comment box are in place to insure that spam and junkmail sites don't use Kids Today Online to post ads and scams.  When used properly and frequently, the Kids Today Online Blogosphere can serve as a unique forum for discussion and growth.  I hope that you enjoy this editorial-style format as much as I do!

I second Kelly's thoughts. Blogging really is a cooperative effort between the blogger and the readers, plus it starts ideas/dialogues/communication that are good for our industry. However, if you're looking to buy an ad, email our publisher, Robin Martinez, robin.martinez@reedbusiness.com, not me : )
