Communication Between Buying Groups And Manufacturers
October 22, 2007
Today I asked one of my manufacturer's representatives what he thought would be a good topic of discussion for the blog format. He responded with several topic ideas, the first of which was communication between buying groups and manufacturers.
The issue of communication seems to be a prevalent problem in the retail world. From manufacturers to sales reps, sales reps to buyers, buyers to employees, etc., there a great lack of understanding... most of which could be remedied by opening more lines of communication. Opening these discussions is the main goal of the blog section of Kids Today Online.
So, with that said, what about communication between buying groups and manufacturers? What good would it do anyone? Well, I'm so glad that you asked.

From a retailers perspective, communicating the needs of our customers helps manufacturers to develop relevant products for our stores. While it is true that most of these innovations will eventually end up on the mass market, manufacturers will often give specialty retailers exclusivity for a time in order to build their brand or product. Exclusivity is always an advantage for the specialty retail sector.
Also for retailers, communication between the buying group and manufacturers allows us insight into the sales and marketing strategies of other companies (who are not in competition with us, rather on the same team as us). Manufacturers are often willing to work with us retailers on adapting strategies to move more of their product.
For the manufacturers, when we, the specialty retail buying groups, communicate our specific needs, manufacturers are given the opportunity to show their support for us. Manufacturers are also given insight into the ever-changing market and consumer thought process by communicating with us.
Communication is always, ALWAYS the key to any successful relationship. Speaking of communication... it's that time. If you have not registered with Kids Today Online, do so right now! After you register, login and post a comment on this or any of the Kids Today blogs! I look forward to communicating with YOU!
