Eco-Credibility
February 27, 2008
I see every sector of industry jumping on the eco-bandwagon. Most consumers are far more "aware" than they used to be. This doesn't make them all tree-huggers, just better informed about the effects of non-green products. But what of the merchants who are pushing eco-friendly products but live eco-nightmare lives? Hypocrisy? I mean, is it really fair for me to push organic, biodegradable crib mattresses and leave work in a gas guzzler? Does the future of Earth's environment mean anything to me or am I just jumping on board with what sells?
Here it is, my eco-diary... my confessions for and against my own credibility as a green retailer:
I used disposable diapers on my child.
I drive an "Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle"
I cannot spend less than 15 minutes in the shower.
I often carpool.
I don't buy products that are tested on animals.
I'm not scared to eat and drink out of plastics... yet.
I don't eat meat.
I used to smoke but now I just chew lots of chewing gum.
I run a small electric heater in the winter.
I prefer organic products but it depends on what is in my bank account at the time.
I recycle but not like I should.
I do not buy organic or vegetarian food for my dog.
I do make my child eat a vegetarian diet.
I do not believe that we can do what we want to the Earth and that God will just take care of it. (someone actually said that to me once)
I do want the Earth to be around for my child, her children, and so on and so forth.
I think that's it. I believe that I am reasonably eco-credible. Now, ask yourself, how eco-credible are you? Are you living a lie in front of your customers? Where do you stand on organics, the environment, and natural products? Anyone else care to confess?
