Nothing To Lose By Jumping On The Eco-Bandwagon
October 12, 2007

Many products on the market boast labels touting their commitment to being "Eco-friendly" or "green".  What is "green" and how environmentally "friendly" must something be to earn this label?  Well, until now, there has been no standard other than organic growth standards which vary by state.

A new certification standard is being set in the US and abroad, though.  The certification is appropriately titled "Cradle to Cradle."  It covers items from the "cradle" stage (birth) of a product to the disposal of the product into the "cradle" of Mother Earth.  I imagine that this certification will be much like our industry's voluntary JPMA certification.

What does this mean for the specialty retailer in the juvenile products industry?  Hopefully it will mean products with the same or better margins than the non-Eco counterparts and exclusivity (at least for a time) to specialty retailers.  Right now the only juvenille product on the Cradle to Cradle certification list is the up-and-coming gDiaper.  I know that in our area (metro-Atlanta) the only places to get these ultra Eco-savvy diapers is at a natural foods store.

I wonder, do any of you have gDiapers in your stores yet?  If not, I'd dare say that it's time to check these out.  Eco-friendly products are the hottest products around right now.  I know we're jumping on this bandwagon.  After all, what do we have to lose by selling earth-friendly, fast-selling products with good margins?  I'd say we have nothing to lose... and everything to gain! :)
