What Is In A Name?
January 8, 2008

Would a rose by any other name not smell just as sweet?  Would a crib by any other manufacturer not be made just as well or perhaps even better?  It's true that a reputable brand name can get your company recognized but as my friend Chris says, "Product is king!"

This is something I was pondering after the Iowa primary last Tuesday.  The name "Clinton" can only carry one senator so far while another candidate must overcome a name like "Obama".  Barack Obama writes in his book The Audacity Of Hope about how he was advised after 9-11 to change his legal name.  Obama said that he would not run from his name, his father's legacy.

I believe the fact that Obama came out on top last Tuesday is indicative of a generation who is more concerned with content and character than with a recognizable name.  This attitude could open the door for many new manufacturers with quality products who might lack notoriety.

So what is in a name?  Well, a name is a good start but, as Senator Obama proved last week, it takes more than a name to sell what you're selling.  Product really is king!
