Product Quality And Value Go Further Than Marketing
August 8, 2007

After my blog titled "You Can Sell Anything", one of my sales reps pointed out the fact that marketing only gets you so far.  The quality and value of the product are what give it staying power.  Great advertisements may get the product out of the door once, but I want the product to keep going out the door... and stay out!  There is nothing worse than having a product hyped up by a manufacturer only to have people constantly returning it or complaining about it.  The reputation that a product develops also reflects on my store.

There is a great deal to be said about the value of a product.  An item may be the greatest product ever but if the price outweighs the advantages then it is of negative value.  I want to sell products that are beneficial to the consumer and profitable for me.  I want products that are unique to specialty stores, reasonably priced with decent margins, and that consumers are going to rave over.  Sometimes the best advertising is "word of mom", as Lisa said.  I love this term because, no matter how much advertising a manufacturer may do, the word on value to the consumer is going to spread... and fast!

Manufacturers, please be advised that the true nature of your product will be made public.  There is something to be said for truth in advertising.  Those moms are on top of all of the latest and greatest... are you?
