The Difference In Symbiotic And Parasitic Relationships In Retail

A symbiotic relationship is a relationship in which both parties benefit from interaction.  In specialty retail we can benefit from any relationship in which both parties behave in an ethical and mutually beneficial manner.  A parasitic relationship is a relationship in which one party is harmed by the interaction with another.  Any relationship in specialty retail in which one party behaves with integrity while the other does not will result in a parasitic relationship.  The party who is honorable will inevitably be consumed by the company who acts questionably.

With this said, I find it most important for my store, one with high ethical standards, to avoid relationships with companies who may become parasites to our success.  These companies would include manufacturers who do not back their products, any manufacturer, sales rep, or other retailer who is dishonest, and any other retailer who does not uphold the same standards in regards to customer service, pricing policies, or otherwise.  

My generation in our business believes in maintaining and surpassing the standards set forth by our grandfather almost four decades ago.  We have long-standing relationships with other integrity-based companies including other local retailers.  We will continue to maintain the relationships and grow new symbiotic relationships for as long as we are around.  What we will never do, however, is knowingly enter in to a relationship that is bound to be parasitic.  For those who have asked us to do so, please do not ask again.  I rest my case.
