Extravagant Parties For Babies
November 26, 2007
After throwing a small-scale birthday party for my 9-year old, I got to thinking about her baby showers and first few birthday parties. I then got to thinking about some of the baby showers that I have attended and others that my customers have had. Why is it that we spend so much on parties for people who will have no recollection of them? I suppose these parties are more for the parents than the children they are supposed to celebrate.
We had a customer who, for her shower, had a high-class cocktail party with expensive custom favors and lavish decorations. This particular woman had a private photographer and a website entirely for her baby shower. We were allowed to visit the site and see the photos. I've never seen anything like it. Oh, and the best part, she registered with us. Good for us, huh? Definitely.
We had another customer who came in from a local record label to purchase a shower gift from a registry. He bought a Bugaboo Cameleon fully assembled and ready to go. Nice gift, eh?
As I think of this, I realize that while I have not had parties this extravagant, I've gone overboard in the past, too. My daughter has had birthday parties featuring ponies, Sponge Bob, a clown, and more. To what avail? To find that, for children, there are better things on which to spend money... namely Orange Crush soda & chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream. The greatest activity at any party I've either thrown or been to? Musical Chairs. My little one dived head first over the back of a chair to thwart her friend's effort to sit in the last seat. That's classy entertainment for all!
As for baby showers, I'm glad people go all out. It is great fun for the parents, makes great memories to later share with the child but it also adds a new dimension to our business. Parents are able to use their registries as checklists while they send all of their friends and family into our store. It's great for everyone involved. Win, win.
