The Importance Of Training
October 31, 2007

Once upon a time customer service was offered in every retail store... or so I hear.  These days it is the place of the specialty retailer to have the answers to a consumer's questions.  I have seen customers (myself included) in all types of stores get highly frustrated with less-than-knowledgeable staff.  If we, the specialty store, are not experienced as both helpful and knowledgeable by a consumer, we may lose the opportunity to maintain a relationship with that customer.

With that said, it is imperative that we make every effort to fully train our sales staff.  This training is not only required upon hire but also on a regular basis.  New products' functions and features must be learned and mastered before being presented to the buying public.  Older product information must be practiced regularly to maintain a mastery of each product.  This specifically applies to metal goods (strollers, car seats, high chairs, etc.) but can also be applied to areas such as furniture construction, bedding content and function, and more.

Take a moment to ask each of your sales staff members random questions about certain products.  See if there are areas of training from which your staff members could benefit.  Take this knowledge and grow your sales force into a treasure chest of know-how and consumer service.  Your business will grow and your staff will be proud to be a part of your team.
