What’s Next: More spaceships

April 10, 2008
From Gifts and Dec

Forget NASA, the most excitement in spaceships is coming from the private sector.  First we had Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic starting commercial passenger flights into space in 2010.  Now Branson has a competitor and we have a private sector space race.  Check out Xcor’s Lynx, a mini-space ship that will begin test flights the year after next.

According to an article in the Washington Post, “Another Firm Joins the Commercial Space Race,” the FAA estimates the space tourism business to be worth $1 billion by 2021.  What I find even more amazing is that, as of right now, Virgin Galactic “. . . has taken 85,000 reservations at $200,000 each. “

So what of the toy industry space race?  Is anyone signing licensing deals with these companies, planning new space products, thinking about what private sector space can mean to the toy industry?  It’s early but maybe not too early to think about it.
