Wallpaper- a modern take on an old subject

November 17, 2008

One of the biggest trends today in home decor is wallpaper and wall décor. This is not a surprise to any of us, but it has taken a completely new twist. What is most interesting is the ability to customize the use of many designs. If you are a retailer, consider carrying some wall covering products to coordinate (not match) to your bedding lines- Many stores coordinate paint colors for the rooms they present, but for a new addition, wallpaper/décor is really the freshest approach for kids rooms.

Wall decals (like the bird cages above) are one of the hottest trends in decorating. The financial investment is relatively low and there is little commitment, and the effect is fantastic. The Single Stone website has so many great wall decals that you could decorate a store or home innovatively & inexpensively for the holidays or anytime using their products!! (The ones above are only $48. For all 3)

I found this image on-line, makes the monsters in the closet not so scary for little ones, a
great decorating idea! I need to make something like these for Whistle & Wink! I don’t have vendor info on this, but isn’t it clever?

I can’t wait to see the movie “Australia”! Why do I mention it? Catherine Martin, the Production Designer for Australia (Academy Award winner for Moulin Rouge Production Design) has a Wallpaper collection with Porters Paints (an Australian paint company) I find her work inspiring. Her kid’s designs are her best, I think. Check out the Porters Paints website for a better look and inspiration ( see products>wallpaper> view the gallery)

This is an Image from Marie Claire Idees, (with instructions on how to make at end of Magazine as usual) but I think it is a great product idea. The horse could be a decal (for those product designers like myself to think of) or cut out of a patterned wallpaper and applied to the wall directly. Here, it’s colored magnetic paint on wood then the pink horse cut-out is applied, thus making it a new kind of bulletin board – how easy is that?

For us grown ups:
Nama Rococo is a wallpaper design company where everything is hand-screened and hand-painted and brilliant! Papers can be bought individually, they become works of art for your wall - these are my personal favorites, I love the playful but sophisticated concepts. Just inspiring! This treatment of framed wallpaper is easy to do for a child’s room and is a great way to have wallpaper without applying to the wall.

These are just a few of the inspiring wall concepts in my files of inspiration. There is an entire range of high tech wall covering, beautiful graphic wall coverings;  far too many to mention here- so I’ll continue wall features on-going.

Hello Esther, thank you for both of your posts! I know it is hard to think about "instant art" when you are an artist, but the good news is, it shows a sincere and market interest in something only the rich or artistic could have had in the past- but now it is accessible to everyone. With that, it can help trigger a future in wall art (or floor art, as you mentioned in your other post) by making it familiar. I don't think artists who paint lovely 1 of a kind murals will be terribly affected by cheaper applique style art because those who can pay for the "real thing" will still want a custom "real thing" that only you can do! Perhaps you can consider working with a vendor to make your murals something which can be marketed! Remember, this is coming from a product designer... I can't help myself.

Thanks for the inspiring look at new wallcoverings. As an interior designer and muralist, I am aware that families today want instant art and decor. I hope we haven't lost the process of making the art.

Hi Lisa, to answer your question about the bottom photo- those are individual pieces of wall paper by Nama Rococo, they are printed on paper. It looks like they were mounted, but could easily be hung by framing.

Bridget, I am so glad that wallpaper is back. For those of us that are not artistic it's a wonderful thing. I just decorated my son Josh's room with a great tree house from Blonder KJ0340M. He feels like he is living in his club house in a tree 24/7. It turned out so cute...

There are a lot of companies in our industry who do these wall decals and I love the idea. The designs go from licensed characters to more sophisticated looks like you've mentioned. Kids Today's accessories portfolio will be online in the next week (also featured in the Nov/Dec print issue) and it includes listings of companies that make wall decals. I love that bottom image in your post--is that wall paper on canvas??

Hi Lisa & Shirley! welcome to the Style Center, thanks for commenting. My dream for Whistle & Wink is to "complete the room" And one of my hopes is to include wall decor and wallpaper- Lisa, I like your idea of including decals for the ceiling! Something besides the usual stars stickers would be nice. But until I get them manufactured- because you are a busy Mom, you may want to check out the Single Stone link above... ( no I don't have stock- just love it) so you don't have to paint clouds on the ceiling- whew! Come back soon- I'll be talking about rugs next week.

Dear Bridget, as a busy Mom who doesn't always have time to keep up on trends, its great to read your blog. I love the idea of wall decals, the possibilities for affordable wall art are endless. I am about to attempt clouds on my sons ceiling, and having a decal would be alot easier.
